CyTRAP Labs advisory - time to update your Adobe Reader to get security fix

Making sure one runs a patched version of the vulnerable software
Recently we reported on a zero-day exploit caused by a vulnerability in Adobe Reader, Adobe Acrobat and Foxit ReaderCASEScontact.org - Adobe Acrobat, Reader and Foxit reader - PATCH AVAILABLE for zero-day - pdf rendering vulnerability
We tell you, how you can find out quick and easy what version runs on your machine and how to update Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat.

Most people probably have some version of Adobe Reader on their machines that is not the latest one. Take a moment to check which version you are running. How it can be done is explained below including the update.

Check for version of Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat is running on PC - KISS
1 Click on Help
2 About Acrobat Reader or Acrobat and a Window will pop up telling one exactly which version is running on one’s PC
UPDATE to latest AND patched version of Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat
A Click on Help
B Click on Update or Check for Updates - have to be online so program can check - will update your PC and than you will have to restart program to make changes effective immediately.

Naturally, the above works well only if you have a stable internet connection and a broadband one would help as well.

If you want to just go online at a place with a broadband connection and download the latest version of Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat, please visit here:

- new downloads from Adobe

Another way to reduce your risk exposure against vulnerability exploits is to use another reader than Adobe Acrobat (i.e. since the latter is used most widely, of course, hacker exploits will most likely take advantage of vulnerabilities found in this software compared to others - biggest effect for hacker).

Naturally, if you prefer other programs to Adobe that work as nicely and are less likely to suffer from a hacker exploit simply because they are less widely used you can find here:

- instead of Adobe Acrobat use FREEPDF - for creating pdf files

- instead of Adobe Reader use Foxit Reader - fast and easy use for reding pdf files

FINALLY WATCH OUT

Just to make sure that you reduce your risks further, do not open pdf files in your browser. An easy way to download files and protect yourself better is accomplished with an add-on from Mozilla for its Firefox browser that we explain and provide the download link for here:
