CyTRAP Labs quicktip - Windows Home Server corrupts files
Data corruption happens when saving files on Windows Home Servers from applications including:
Windows Vista Photo Gallery,
Windows Movie Maker for Vista
Windows Live Photo Gallery,
Microsoft Office OneNote 2007,
Microsoft Office OneNote 2003 and
SyncToy 2.0 Beta,
And incidentally, some applications, like Microsoft Money and Microsoft Outlook, do not support storing files on shared folders as they are supposed to! Problems happen also if you use Torrent applications, with Intuit Quicken, and with QuickBooks program files.
The above can be quite a frustrating experience because as users point out it can easily take just about a whole evening trying to get the HP Media server working, especially to make the device visible on a home network. On top of all these problems one has now to deal with the siutation that files will get corrupted.
WHAT CAN YOU DO
Microsoft is trying to fix this issue but until then:
BEFORE storing any of these files on a system that is running Windows Home Server- make a backup copy.

More than half the households in Germany, UK, or The Netherlands have more than one personal computer. An ever growing number of these computers are hooked up together to form home networks.

During November, Hewlett-Packard or HP became the first hardware vendor to launch a product based on Microsoft’s new home server software and began accepting orders for two versions of the product, the HP Media-Smart Server HP EX470/EX475: a 500Gb (Gigabyte) version for $599 and a 1Tb (terabyte) version for $749. the product will be released in Europe by early 2008.
Fujitsu Siemens, LaCie amongst others are expected to release their products in early 2008.

In theory and thanks to home networks, various machines can share information easily. In practice, precious digital content including photographs, music, videos and documents is often scattered across a network. Here the Microsoft Windows Home Server was supposed to make things easier.
Unfortunately, until the risk for having one’s file corrupted when putting them on the WHS, users should refrain from doing so. If you have installed a Microsoft Windows Home Server from Hewlett-Packard (the first that released the product), please make sure you have made a backup copy first.
